Decorating the Nursery on a Budget

Healthy Kids

One of the joys of preparing for a new arrival is putting together the nursery. However, it can be quite the challenge to decide on the right nursery decorations to go with the theme. Furthermore, it can be a huge financial burden, when you add up all the costs. There are lots of ways to have a super cute nursery that will last your child a few years before having to update their room – without spending a fortune.

Bargain Hunting for the Bigger Nursery Accessories

The first thing you need to do is concentrate on the essential nursery furniture, which will include the cot, somewhere to store babies clothing and perhaps a change table. Start your search for deals early. Keep in mind that most baby stores and department stores such as Target, Babies ‘R’ Us and Baby Bunting, will have a large sale every season. If you plan ahead, you should be able to get all larger nursery items for at least 40% off the regular retail price. Make sure you check the catalogues each week to see which nursery decorations are on sale.

Another option is to head to second hand stores and garage sales. Check the local paper every week for ‘baby sales’ and see what you can find. You will most likely save 50% or more by purchasing used nursery furniture. Join your local Facebook Buy, Sell and Swap page and make it a habit of checking new items at least once a week. There is no doubt that a lot of the items listed will be baby related and in good condition. Ask your friends that have finished their families if they have a cot in good condition you might use – cheap is good, but free is better!

Baby Nursery Theme Extras

When buying your baby nursery accessories, including wallpaper, curtains, bedding, etc, consider the hunt for bargains part of the fun.  Start with online auctions such as eBay where you will find just about anything and everything for your baby’s nursery décor.

Think carefully about the theme – what might be good for a baby might not be so suitable for a toddler.  You don’t want to have to redecorate for a few years – so perhaps use a colour or generic theme that they won’t tire of so easy – and can be updated easily too.  A beautiful pastel or neutral colour works well as you can update pictures and toys to suit ‘what they are into’ at the time.

For example:  I painted my boys room with one red feature wall – and matched blankets etc.  When he was a toddler he was into Elmo – so adding a few pictures and Elmo dolls fitted right in.

You can also opt to DIY when it comes to crafting the perfect theme for your nursery. Visit a craft or fabric store and purchase some photo frames, material and paint. If you have the time and talent, you may be able to make your own pillows, blankets, curtains, wall hangings and bedding out of the chosen fabric. Even without much artsy flair, you could paint photo frames, baskets and other nursery accessories in the colour of your choice to add a personal touch to your baby’s room. Another way to save on nursery décor is to check online for prints and pictures that will match your theme. You can easily print them off and frame them for a professional look without the price tag.
